Candles Create Affordable Holiday Magic

Candles Create Affordable Holiday Magic

How do Americans plan to celebrate the holidays when the economy is still struggling and money is tight? By focusing on the simple traditions that make the holiday season both magical and comforting.

That’s why candles are taking the center stage in holiday decorating and entertaining plans for 2009. For a modest expenditure, candles can create an inviting home and unmatched holiday ambience.

Design Trends

The timeless reds and greens of Christmas are at the heart of this year’s decorating palette, but in distinctive combinations that either evoke memories of holidays past or suggest a more contemporary flair.

For traditional homes, deep crimsons and dark greens are often paired with rich golds and creamy whites reminiscent of an Edwardian holiday scene. For a more casual and modern feel, look for ruby reds and peridot greens paired with silvers and bright white.

Whether your style is contemporary or traditional, you’ll find swirls, patterns and texture adding an artisan touch to the look of this year’s holiday décor…from candles and candleholders to tree ornaments, tableware and even gift wrap.

Scented candles remain the most popular and affordable way to infuse your home with holiday ambiance. This year’s favored fragrances are the traditional yuletide scents – berry, cinnamon and evergreen – highlighted by sophisticated notes of pear, apple, ginger, currant, mocha and vanilla.

Decorating with Candles

Create a festive note of welcome in the entry hall or foyer with a large white or red pillar on a footed hurricane with berried holly leaves nestled around the base.

Mantels are typically the focus of most holiday décor arrangements. They’re the perfect spot for groupings of tapers or pillars in metallic candlesticks of varying height, surrounded by a sweep of evergreen boughs. Consider using red or white candles to offset the foliage, along with handblown or patterned ornaments for additional color, sparkle and focal interest.

Holiday meals – from informal family get-togethers to formal dinner parties – are at the heart of most holiday celebrations and the natural setting for candles. Dinner table arrangements shouldn’t compete with the enjoyment of food or conversation. That means arrangements that won’t block your view of others at the table, and unscented candles that won’t vie with the aromas of your meal.

For formal dinners, there’s nothing more dramatic or pleasing than a table that sparkles. A simple but elegant centerpiece might incorporate an oblong glass bowl of ornaments, or greenery and pinecones, surrounded by tealights in faceted glass holders and set upon a mirror. Dim the lights, light the candles and allow the faceted glass and mirror reflect the glow of the candlelight for a radiant shimmer.

Buffet tables and casual family meals call for simpler centerpieces. Place a series of handsome pillars on a flat ceramic or metal tray flanked by small vases of red carnations or poinsettias for an appealing seasonal tableau.

Make Your Holidays Safe

Accidental candle fires increase four-fold during the holiday season, so the National Candle Associations urges all consumers to take special care with candles during the holidays.

  • Always keep a burning candle within your sight. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Never burn a candle on or near anything that can catch fire. Be especially careful with flammable decorations or placing candles too close to Christmas greenery or Christmas trees.
  • Always use a candleholder specifically designed for candle use. The holder should be heat resistant, sturdy and big enough to collect dripping wax. Never place pillars or any candles directly on furniture, whether glass or wood, or directly on greenery.
  • Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets.
  • Trim candlewicks to ¼ inch before lighting or re-lighting, and keep the wax-pool free of wick trimmings, dust, matches and debris at all times. Too-long wicks can cause uneven burning, smoking and dripping.

Autumn has arrived….

Decorating for the changing seasons can get expensive quickly and considering the state of the economy, we are all struggling to find ways to cut corners. This doesn’t mean that you have to forgo decorating your home this fall season; it only means that you have to be a little more creative and autumn themed candles and accessories are the perfect fit.

A quick and simple update for the season is to remove all your accents from your mantle and place a simple leaf garland over the top and place a Pine or Autumn Apple scented candles within the garland. The scents from our candles are strong enough that you don’t need to light them, so your home will still have the autumn scent reminding you the holiday season is just around the corner.

For your bedroom, nothing sparks romance more that the gentle glow of a candle. To add a touch of seasonal elegance, use a Vanilla or Brown Sugar candles in fun autumn themed holders. Not only do you still get the romantic mood, but a reminder of chilly nights to come that will make you want to snuggle up close.

Why use a predictable centerpiece when you can have a stunning display of Cinnamon or All Spice scented candles in the center of the table? Our Round Trio Candle Set or our Cube Trio Candle Set are both simple, elegant and affordable. Light those for meals and it will turn any dinner into a harvest celebration.

It is the simple accents that make the most impact. Now that you have a few ideas, why not visit our website and let Deysi’s Candles give you a hand in your decorating plans? Do you have in mind a particular style that is not in our website? No problem! We can create that unique seasonal candle so it matches perfectly with your styling decorations.

Wax Removal Suggestions

First, we hope everybody enjoyed their 4th of July weekend!!

During our long weekend, a friend asked me if there was a way to remove some drops of wax from her tablecloth without damaging it. I gave her a couple of tips and it dawn on me to also share these tips with the rest of our Deysi’s Candles readers.

I hope our suggestions come in handy when you find yourself in a wax situation.

CLEANING CANDLEHOLDERS

To remove melted wax from your votive cups or other candleholders, place the candleholder in the freezer for 2-3 hours to let the wax completely harden. Remove the candleholder from the freezer, and gently pop the wax from the holder using a blunt knife, such as a butter knife, or a spoon. Any remaining wax can be removed by washing the holder in hot, sudsy water.

REMOVING SPILLED WAX

Below are some suggestions for removing spilled wax from a variety of surfaces. Be sure to always test the method in an inconspicuous place before treating the whole spill.

Nonporous surfaces (glass, plastic, glazed ceramic):Use a blunt knife (such as a butter knife or a plastic knife) or an old credit card to gently scrape away as much wax as you can. Remove remaining wax by washing the item in hot, sudsy water, or use a commercial wax remover. If necessary, you can use a razor to remove any remaining bits of wax.

Carpets and Rugs: Fill a small plastic bag with ice and run it over the wax spill to harden the wax. Once it is hardened, use a blunt knife or spoon to chip away as much wax as you can. You may need to run the ice over the wax again to harden it. Once you have removed as much wax as you can, lay several sheets of paper towel or a piece of a paper grocery bag over the spill. Turn your iron to a low setting*; you may want to protect your iron from getting wax on it by covering it with a thin towel or piece of aluminum foil. Press down your iron on the paper towel or paper bag; the wax from the carpet will be absorbed into the paper. As you work through the spill, you may have to replace the paper towel/bag with a fresh one several times, depending on how much wax you need to remove.

If any of the spill remains, you should try a commercial carpet stain remover, or contact a professional carpet cleaner.

*NOTE: Some synthetic carpets may melt if you set the temperature on your iron too high. Be sure to keep the iron on a low setting, and test this method on a small, inconspicuous spot prior to proceeding.

Porous Surfaces (wood, stone, concrete, unglazed ceramics, etc.): It may be impossible to completely remove the wax from a porous surface, as the melted wax can permeate down into the material.

As quickly as possible after the spill, fill a plastic bag with ice and apply to the wax to harden it and minimize its seepage into the material. Then, using a blunt knife or old credit card, gently scrape up as much wax as you can, being careful not to mar the surface the wax spilled onto. At this point, you can try the iron and paper towel/paper bag method as described above in carpet spills. Again, be sure to test this in an inconspicuous spot, and make sure that the material you are using the iron on can withstand the heat. Otherwise, a commercial wax remover can be used.

Small tabletop spills: Set your hair dryer to the lowest setting, and warm the wax for several seconds. Using a blunt knife or old credit card, gently scrape up as much wax as you can, taking care not to mar the tabletop surface. You can then buff away any remaining wax residue.

Clothing: Harden the wax by running ice cubes over the spill (or you can put the garment itself straight into the freezer!). Once hardened, use a blunt knife or old credit card to scrape off as much wax as you can. At this point, there are a couple methods you can try.

  1. Pour boiling water through the stain, and wash the garment separately in hot water. If the garment should not be washed in hot water, you may want to try the next method:
  2. Use mineral spirits or an oil solvent to remove residue. Rinse with isopropyl alcohol and let dry. Wash with an enzyme detergent.

*Note: these methods could damage the fabric. If you are uncertain, take the garment to a professional dry cleaner.

TLC 4 CANDLES

Many of our customers, family members and friends have shared with us their experiences with other candles and based on their comments we have learned that the simplest things are often forgotten.

For example, most people do not know that you can actually improve the quality of the flame you get from your candles. Some people think that if a flame is too large or you are getting excess soot that it is the makers fault. Well sometimes this is true, but often a little tender loving care can sort out many candle problems.

When you first start burning candles, you don’t expect to do much more than light a match and enjoy the candlelight. While this is certainly a simplified version, for most of us candle burning is a science and an art. The good news though, is by following some simple candle maintenance rules your candles will burn longer and the better your experience will be. Even better news; there really isn’t that much to do.

CANDLE BURNING 101

  • The first time you light a pillar candle, burn it one hour for every inch of its diameter. This will allow the pool of wax to extend to the outside rim and prevent your candle from forming a “canyon” in its center. Burning your candle this way will also set its memory. Each time you re-light the candle it will “remember” to burn out to the rim.
  • Keep your wicks trimmed!! This essential for a clean, smoke free burn. Many people complain about candles that smoke and this can be eliminated by trimming the wicks to 1/4 inch every time you burn the candle. This is true for all types of candles.
  • If your candle is smoking despite trimming the wick and checking for debris in the melt pool, extinguish the candle immediately. Trim the wick again a little more and allow to cool before relighting. The smoking will stop. With a quality candle, you shouldn’t have problems with smoking, but it is worth remembering that scented candles will smoke more than unscented candles.
  • When you burn a highly scented candle, sometimes “mushrooming” will occur on the wick. Treat this as a friendly reminder that you need to trim the wick.
  • Never “blow out” a candle. Blowing will spray the wax everywhere and cause the candle to drip and smoke. The most effective way to extinguish the flame of a candle is to use a candle snuffer. If you don’t own a snuffer, the best way to extinguish the candle is to place your forefinger in front of the flame before you blow. This clever trick means that the air will hit the flame from the sides instead of hitting it directly.

CANDLE SAFETY

IMPORTANT: While everything I have described will enhance your experience burning candles, the advice below is essential. Please ensure you read this advice for burning your candles safely.

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended!
  • Keep debris out of the melt pool.
  • Keep out of the reach of children and pets.
  • To prevent fading, keep out of direct sunlight.
  • To prevent smoking, trim wick to 1/4 inch prior to each use and keep trimmed.
  • Extinguish by dipping wick into melted wax then reposition. This will help eliminate smoking.
  • If candle smokes, extinguish, trim wick & re-light.
  • If candle burns unevenly due to a draft, carefully push the wick to the higher side.. If this causes dripping, extinguish, cool and relight. Repeat a few times and the candle will repair itself.

Candles are great around the home but can also be a little bit of work to get them to burn to perfection. So keep them well maintained and use basic safety rules. Happy Burning!
